Florida!

Good morning! Permalink to Good morning!

The Web did a fantastic job of covering the US presidential election yesterday. As I hoped there were maps and links, and mistakes and corrections and lots of smart people participating, sending me pointers which were aggregated on the Scripting News website.

But all that michegas didn't yield a decision. The most unsure election in the television age. First it was Gore's to lose, with the key "battleground" states -- Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania -- going to Gore, but then, wait, it's Bush's to lose and now, who knows who the next president of the United States will be? No one. We ran a survey of our readers early this morning, who have self-declared to heavily favor Gore, and "I don't know" is now a popular answer to the "Who will win?" question.

It comes down to less than 2,000 votes in a single state, Florida; which is highly appropriate. Florida is neither a southern state or a northeastern state, or the virtual capital of Latin America. It's all those things. A recount is going to happen today, and we're going to keep our focus on covering the Web covering the election, and return to software development when this confusing and fascinating situation resolves itself.

Send pointers to interesting information and comment on the election in Florida. It's going to be an interesting and historic day, and we'll cover it all on the Web.
