Nine Years of DaveNet

Wednesday, October 8, 2003 by Dave Winer.

Some time Permalink to Some time

Nine years ago, in October 1994, I wrote my first DaveNet essays.

And people say this a fad.

Unedited voice of an individual Permalink to Unedited voice of an individual

I haven't counted all the essays I've published, but there are a lot of them. Except for the guest pieces, they were all written by me.

And the only editor was me. Yeah there are some spelling errors. But it's all what I think, what I really think, for better or worse.

Look ma. No hands!

BloggerCon Permalink to BloggerCon

Last weekend was BloggerCon, at Harvard Law School, the first conference I have ever hosted. I've talked about doing a conference for many years, but now I've done one. We filled the room with brains and enthusiasm. Hardly a hitch. It was great. Totally 1.0.

Red Sox Permalink to Red Sox

Of course the American League is not a "real" league, but if it were, Boston fans could teach the rest of the country a thing or two (except the Mets). Red Sox fans might say: Hell or high water, through thick and thin, in sickness and in health, etc etc. The fans have a philosophy. "We lose but we love." And what a stadium.

This year the losers have a chance to win. Even better, the perennial National League losers, the Chicago Cubs, have a chance too. All things being equal, there's only a 25 percent chance of the dream series, but the Baseball God is especially powerful and good at making deals with the other gods. And of all the gods he has the worst sense of humor (or the best depending on how you look at it).

Nine years Permalink to Nine years

In the nine years we've accomplished a lot. Lots of trial balloons that didn't fly. And some that did.

Lots of BigCo's and fat smelly music industry execs.

Occasionally someone who made a difference.

All the people who presented at my conference are people who count. Most of them aren't rich. But they write, and lead, and have visions, and people listen when they speak. That's why they're the ones I chose to speak.

We didn't have sponsors, so everyone who spoke told you what they think.

And nine years is a long time.

Still diggin.
